Big Bocs Bwyd

The Big Bocs Bwyd at Cwmfelin Primary School

The Big Bocs Bwyd is a Welsh Government project that has been introduced to help poverty in local communities, reduce food waste and to provide hands on learning opportunities for pupils. The Big Bocs Bwyd works on a 'Pay as you Can' basis and therefore, customers only need to make a small donation of what they can afford, to buy the products they need. The food and toiletries provided will mainly be donated from supermarkets which helps them reduce the amount of food waste they produce.

After many months of planning, we successfully launched the opening of our Big Bocs Bwyd on Thursday 21st October 2021. We have been extremely lucky to have lots of support from businesses in our local community. They have donated surplus food and toiletries to us in a bid to help families in our school and local community. We would like to say a special thank you to Morrison's in Baglan, Tesco in Maesteg, Sainsbury's in Bridgend, Maddock Kembrey Meats in Maesteg and WEPA (The Paper Mills), for their very generous donations. Without these wonderful local businesses our Big Bocs Bwyd would not be as successful as it is today.

Our opening days/ times are:

Tuesday's - 8:50am - 9:20am and 3.30pm - 4.00pm

Friday's - 8.50am - 9:20am and 3.30pm - 4.00pm

For more information and updates on the wonderful products we have on offer please see our Facebook Group - 'The Big Bocs Bwyd @ Cwmfelin Primary School'. This is a closed group which will require you to answer a few questions before you are accepted. If you know a member of the local community that may benefit from what we have on offer then please pick up a leaflet when you next visit or direct them to this page link.

We will only be accepting cash donations. All donations are completely anonymous.

Please bring your own carrier bags. Reuseable hessian bags can be bought for £2 in The Big Bocs Bwyd.

Volunteers

The Big Bocs Bwyd is run by Miss R. Hopkins (Reception teacher) and Mrs L. Evans (Year 6 teacher).

Behind the scenes we are busy ensuring that we keep the Bocs well stocked for our ever growing Big Bocs Bwyd Community, while also embedding the ethos behind the Bocs into our new curriculum.

We have a small group of volunteers who help us collect supermarket donations. We use Tempo Time Credits as a way to say thank you and a small gesture to our volunteers. We are always looking for more helping hands (no job is too small) so if you would like to join our volunteer team then please contact us on the email below

News and Updates

Our 1st Anniversary celebrations were a resounding success with lots of visitors to the bocs and lots of food saved from landfill. Our raffle raised an incredible £560! A huge THANK YOU to everyone that supported this worthwhile event. The funds will be put back in to the BBB project to buy more supplies and to ensure we can continue to move forward.
